What is a giving party?

October 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So glad you asked!

Last year, a smart girl in North Carolina had a great idea for a party. The holidays were approaching and invitations to “sip and shop” parties were piling up. She thought, “why not have a shopping party that allows you to donate to a worthy cause and give away your donations in honor of people you love, rather than buying them some stuff they may or may not want?”

She told a few friends, who immediately jumped on board, and the first annual Giving Party took place in Chapel Hill November 29th, 2007.

In two hours, the party raised over $12,000 for World Vision, Donors Choose, Communities in Schools of Durham and the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County. Beyond doing good, the party was FUN and they vowed to do it again next year.

This year, the Giving Party in Chapel Hill is gearing up for more good times with sister parties that have sprung up in Charleston and Charlotte. Give until it feels good!

Welcome

Welcome to the 2008 Lowcountry Giving Party. Planning is well underway for December 4th’s giving party and friends Becky Mann, Krista McGuire and Darby Siegel are organizing the details. Here’s the charitable lineup as it stands right now:

World Vision

Donors Choose

Dress for Success

My Sister’s House

Representatives will be available to accept donations and laptops will be available around the party to give to these or other organizations. Preprinted cards will make it easy for guests to give and then share their gift. At the end of the party, gifts will be tallied (anonymously) and we’ll all share a toast to celebrate how good it feels to GIVE.
